HALVORSON GETS HIS HALO ON |
Brent Halvorson has never backed down from a challenge, but at 38 years old the most decorated player in the history of the Hickory Baseball league is facing his biggest one yet. "I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life," said Halvorson while building homes in his hometown of Hannibal, Missouri for underprivledged kids. "It's always exciting to get to prove yourself in a new environment, something I know a lot about."
Halvorson's career has certainly been one of many travels, playing with the Giants, Marines (3 times), Cardinals and Yankees (2 times). In that time he's managed to attend 13 All-Star games, win 8 Cy Young awards and 3 HBL titles (two with Seattle, one with New York). He's also the only 300 game winner in HBL history, registering over 3700 strikeouts and 101 complete games in his storied career.
Before he rides off into the sunset (and the Hall of Fame, naturally), he'll be throwing one of the teams he's given the most grief to over the past decade plus - the Anaheim Angels. At a news conference last week, Angels GM Robert Glass seemed more than optimistic that Halvorson would be able to handle Anaheim's bandbox of a field, a far cry from Seattle's spacious ballpark.
"Look, Anaheim fans have seen this guy come in here for years and shut down our high-powered offenses. It will be nice to have him on our side for once." One hurdle Halvorson will be facing will be the Angels lineup, which is anything but high-powered nowadays. Young and experienced, the offense will be relying on Halvorson and the rest of the rotation to keep games close.
As for Anaheim star pitcher Willie Manning, he couldn't be more excited to see Halvorson slip on a red and white uniform. "Are you kidding me? The guy is a legend. I get excited in the pants just being in the same room as him." Others, especially Seattle fans, weren't quite as thrilled. One internet post who goes by the handle 'TheGreatHalvorson' couldn't quite come to terms with Halvorson's arrival in Orange County. "I'm not sure what 'Ugly' is thinking. Seattle is so much better than Anaheim. Those guys suck. Suck suck suck.'"
Wrapping up their press conference, Glass announced that Halvorson's jersey would be instantly retired from the team, and handed Halvorson a 'free hot dogs for life' coupon, good only at Angel Stadium on Mondays through Thursdays every other week in August.
