2034 THE YEAR OF THE FAN |
Ever since the greats like: Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, and Ted Williams graced the diamond with their diving catches or the smashing of the ball over the outfield wall for a walk off homer, fans have been there. The fans that cheered with Carlton Fisk as he wished the ball back over the left field wall giving the Red Sox a great playoff victory. Perhaps the fans cried as Bill Buckner watched the ball roll through his legs in 1986, giving the Mets a World Series championship. Fans have had many ups and many downs; most fans will live and die with their teams. So what can the average fan expect from their teams in 2034?
For the first time since I’ve been part of this league, the teams will remain pretty much the same as in 2033. Does that mean that we are in store for more Calgary or Seattle domination? Not necessarily true, I mean the Oakland A’s came out of nowhere to destroy the magnificent Mariners in the playoffs, and then put the Storm out during the World Series. If Oakland’s success last year means anything for the fan, then it is any team any year can win it all.
With each new season that passes there are 24 teams that pray for that chance at immortality. Fans go to the games and cheer when Raymond England crushes a walk-off homer, lifting the Royals to a victory over the hated Twins. Fans will boo like crazy when Michael Patton is rocked in the ninth inning by the Red Sox. It is a fans right to cheer whomever they want, and boo those players who do not perform as they are capable.
What can the fan expect? I say 2034 will bring plenty of drama to the field. Can Oakland repeat? What about Kansas City and Toronto, do they have enough to grab the division or a wildcard? Will Calgary and San Francisco be unseated as the kings of their divisions? Can Washington hold off the mighty Mets and the pesky Pirates for another divisional title? Or perhaps a dark horse will emerge like the Red Sox or Brewers, but one thing for sure is the fan will be there with every home run and every strike out. 2034 is the year of the fan, and there is a lot to be excited about.
